Steven Grenbeaux Mayor of Modesto
I am proud to live in Modesto. I am proud of what Modesto
has been, and what it will be. I was born and raised in
Modesto. I attended Burbank Elementary, Mark Twain Junior
High, and graduated from Modesto High School in 1963. I
earned a B.A. from California State University, San Francisco
and an Elementary Teaching Credential from California State
University, Stanislaus. I earned the Eagle Scout Award at
age fourteen. After college I served four years as an Airborne
Infantry Officer. I attained the rank of Captain and was
wounded in action in Viet Nam.
I have
a long history of community service. I have served as Director
of the Modesto Jaycees, on the Steering Committees of the
Underprivileged Children's Christmas Shopping Tour, the
California Relays, and the Modesto High School Centennial.
I was Vice Chairman of the Chief Tenaya District, and Vice
President of the Yosemite Council, Boy Scouts of America.
I have served on the Board of Directors of the American
Heart Association and the American Diabetes Association.
I have been President of the Empire Teacher's Association,
and am serving as the President of the Modesto High School
Hall of Fame Committee. In 1979 I was elected to the first
of three terms on the Modesto City Schools Board of Education.
I served two terms as President of the Board of Education.
I have taught at Empire Elementary School for the last twenty-eight
years. In 1998 in was included in Who's Who in American
Teachers. I am the 2002 Wal-Mart Teacher of the Year for
the Modesto-Ceres area. I have been married to Karen Wallers
Grenbeaux for the last 25 years. We have a daughter, Elizabeth,
who is a sophomore at Modesto High.
Modesto means a lot to my family and me. I would like to
continue my service to Modesto as mayor. With my leadership
Modesto can be an even better place to live.
